Attention future cannabis experts! There’s now a college degree program designed for you!

Colorado State University-Pueblo campus recently announced that beginning in the fall; they will offer a brand new undergraduate degree program in Cannabis Science. Graduates of the new program will receive a Bachelor of Science in Cannabis Biology and Chemistry.

The Colorado Department approved the new program of Higher Education as federal healthcare officials seek research into the effects that cannabis has on humans.

In addition to this new degree, CSU-Fort Collins plans to commence a Cannabinoid Research Lab within its College of Natural Sciences. The lab plans to collaborate with the Institute of Cannabis Research at CSU-Pueblo.

CSU-Pueblo based its new program on the successful Medicinal Plant Chemistry degree, which is offered at Northern Michigan University. When it was introduced back in 2017, this degree was the first of its kind.

The school is expecting high demand from students interested in careers in the cannabis and hemp industries. The degree is likened to a double-major in biology and chemistry with two paths to pursue, natural products or analytical chemistry.

The natural products track will offer studies in areas such as neurobiology, biochemistry, and genetics with cannabis labs. In contrast, the analytical chemistry track will focus on chemical compounds and concentrations of cannabinoids.

In discussing the new Cannabis Science degree with the Denver Post, David Lehmpuhl, Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics, described the program as a “rigorous degree” and that “one of the things that motivated us in developing this program was this industry is sort of developed without oversight and regulation. Lehmpuhl continued, “I think now it’s becoming clear when you look at even the recent vaping crisis that occurred that there’s a need for having trained scientists in that space. We’re not pro-cannabis or anti-cannabis. What we’re about will be the science and training students to look at that science.”

Hopefully, this new degree program will spark interest in a new generation of students that will study and grow into the cannabis experts of the future that will provide much-needed research and innovation to help propel the industry forward.
